Saturday Evening: The Unknown

Yes – The Unknown is actually the band’s name. So to quote Donald Rumsfled “they are known Unknowns and not unknown Unknowns”.

THE UNKNOWN were formed in November 2004 by Tom and Shirley Greenwood. The idea was to have a band with a repertoire of well-known standard songs as well as the not so obvious, but still great songs. The result is a mix that works well and guarantees to give audiences a memorable experience.

In 2006 their original guitarist Stewart announced that he wanted to join another band closer to home, so local musician Ash Godbourdon, already a friend of the band, was called in to fill the guitar spot and likewise in 2008 Dave McWhan took the bass spot from original member Jeff .The band plays mainly in and around Greater Manchester in a wide variety of venues and in April 2008, after having played at a special event at Poynton Bowling Club in Cheshire, were presented with a certificate in thanks for helping to raise over £6,000.00 for Cancer Research. Each member of The Unknown has had vast experience over the years – here is a brief history:

SHIRLEY – KEYBOARDS / VOCALS
In the 1970′s – 80′s with Tom in a successful 4 piece cabaret outfit Salt of the Earth. Gigs include Wilderspool Stadium in support band for Bernhard Manning , and again with Jim Bowen. After the band split, Shirley formed various duo’s with Tom which were successful but their first love ‘A proper rock band’ came knocking once more and after a couple of attempts they eventually founded The Unknown As well as playing in the band, Shirley is a qualified music teacher and full time musician. She has traditional tastes when it comes to music, particularly loves the sound of the Hammond Organ and acoustic piano. Some of her favourite artistes are Simply Red, Roxy Music, Imelda May and Alice Cooper.

TOM – DRUMS / VOCALS
Tom is the main singer along with Shirley. He started out in Scotland in the late 60′s in various rock outfits before coming to England where he met Shirley and joined The Salt of the Earth. One of Tom’s hobbies is recording and he has a small studio at home which he uses to record the band and write original material. In 2005 he was invited by Dave to join White Van Man which is Tony Audenshaw’s band [T.V's Bob Hope in Emmerdale]. It was a great experience but trying to play in two bands is very demanding so Tom left W.V.M. to concentrate on The Unknown. Tom plays a Yamaha kit. His favourite artistes include Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Yes, Genesis and The Beatles.

DAVE – BASS / VOCALS
Dave has played with many bands over the years and lays down a solid foundation that can be relied upon. Dave also plays with White Van Man and has played many venues including Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, The Albert Hall and along with Tom, the Emmerdale 4,000 episode party in Harrogate. His favourite artistes include Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, Z.Z.Top and Whitesnake.

ASH – LEAD GUITAR / VOCALS
Ash hails from Mauritius where he was brought up on reggae and soul. He moved to the UK in the early 80’s to study teaching, joined various bands and enjoys sounds which lend themselves very well to The Unknowns song list. His favourite music is Santana, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.
